Why is Winslow considering changes to the Junior High School?

The Winslow Junior High School was built in 1928 and has numerous chronic problems with ventilation, insulation, heating and fire suppression systems among other defects.

What is being recommended by the Junior High Building Committee?

The committee is recommending that the sixth grade move to the Winslow Elementary School and the seventh and eighth grades to Winslow High School.  This would include new construction and renovation at both the Winslow Elementary School and the Winslow High School.

When would the changes happen?

The recommendation of the Junior High Building Committee, which was approved by the Winslow Board of Education, was to close the junior high building at the end of the 2017-18 School year.  In August 2016, the time frame was extended a year. (Newspaper Article)

Who is on the Winslow Junior High Building Committee?

Many years have elapsed since the first meeting, so the members of the committee have changed over time.  The current members are are listed in the meeting minutes, which are available in the list of files at the bottom of the page.

Which options were considered?

  1. Renovate existing Junior High
  2. Build new Junior High
  3. 6th graders moved into Winslow Elementary School and 7th /8th grade wing built on Winslow Elementary School
  4. 6th graders moved into Winslow Elementary School and 7th /8th grade wing built on Winslow High School

Will there be a public referendum?

Yes.  The committee is planning a referendum vote in November 2017 to get permission from the town to enter into bonds, or long-term loans, for the project.

This has yet to be determined.  Many options are being considered.
